What's next?

I've got this Butterick Jacket cut out - one of the things I did on my home alone week. I'm making view C with view D sleeves and not sure yet with or without collar, one ore three buttons. So I guess I'm making either C or D, you can't see it well but the sleeve on D have an add on piece with a slit opening. (That all sounds inelegant!)

The fabric is original '70's polyester. It is woven into these diagonal ridges in this fabulous lime green colour. It is very light and if you notice it us fused with interlining/facing(?) to keep the fabric from fraying. I remembered this from my Mum's stash and got it about a year ago. I was a bit hesitant about the  brightness of the green but then I saw the Queen wearing it in Ireland recently (I'm a Republican but I saw it on the news).

Anyway it matches perfectly with this green spot fabric I had just a metre of which was a remnant somewhere for $1. It is a mid weigh cotton but quite open weave - I think it is curtain fabric.

I originally thought it would make a great apron but just couldn't do it and then I got this skirt pattern recently and thought I would make that to test it. It was going to be a wearable muslin (as all my sewn items are) before I cut out some corduroy I got at Spotlight on sale a few months ago, but cut out both and have made up the corduroy one already - just the zip and hem to go. I didn't have enough of the fabric in the corduroy to make a waistband so cut out some facings and made it bandless which actually works well for my short waist. I added 25cm to the length!

Do you look at those body shape symbols on the packet to help you choose if the pattern is right for your body shape? I noticed after I received the pattern in the mail that the only shape this was not suited to was the triangle - meaning the pear shape - meaning me! I presume it is more about the top because the skirt is simply an A-line skirt blocked out to add the pockets. You need big shoulders to wear that top - something I have in spirit but not in body! I know a lot of people have made that top and I like it on them but not sure about it on me. I was just lazy to draft my own skirt pattern as this was $5.99 so who could bother.

(sorry about that stupid camera flash - it just washes out the centre of the photo every time!! Is there a way to adjust that? It's just a point and shoot Nikon.Arrgh)

I love green. I especially love any shade of green between apple and lime. What's not to love about a 70s inspired 2-piece outfit in my favourite colour? Can't wait to see the finished outfit.

I love lime green and this jacket is going to be fantastic! I think you'll get way more use out of this colour than you realise. I completely ignore the pattern body shape recommendations and so far I haven't had any disasters. I've stopped putting waistbands on skirts, too. I have a TNT pencil skirt I've been making for years and when I made it last, I didn't have enough fabric (an op shop remnant) for a waist band, so I staytaped the waistline and just stitched the line straight to it. I understitched the line and pressed it into place over a ham and it works perfectly. No stiffness at the waist and it's way more comfortable. I'm going to make all my skirts like that now.

Thanks Carol!... I have a lighter lime green jacket and I do get lots of use out of it but it is fading so this one won't!! I have never made a waist stay but must try as this would be even less bulk especially on the corduroy.

Thanks Pam... yes I think it will be great in the seeming milli seconds between spring and summer here. I knew that fabric could not be an apron!

I'm sure your outfit will look great. I have that pattern, and have made up both the top and the skirt, and will again! It is one of my favourite patterns!

Thank you! Yes I have seen your versions. I don't think I have the patience to do French seams on the top but that won't be till summer so maybe on the long uni holidays I will feel so inclined!

The saddest dress, then a few more.

Well hello. It's been a while. It was 8 months from the last post to the previous one to that and it's a bit longer this time. The last day I wrote was 10 Jul 2021. On 12 July my son and I were finally seeing Tim Minchin  after booking it before we went to Europe at the end of 2019. It was going to be April 2020, but changed a few times and although it was a school night (year 12 for Alex) we went for dinner and sat in the show. My Mum had gone to hospital that morning and my sister was still at the hospital with her. Just after interval I got a message on my phone, "get to the hospital now". So we raced out and to the hospital where. although it was a lockdown and no visitors allowed, all 10 of us were allowed to see Mum as she was end of life. I won't go into the whole thing but Mum didn't die that night, but because of lockdown, we were not allowed to go and see her until a week and a half later when we were allowed just to discuss palliative care. Bubble O'Bill: take 2; bikinis

With some time at home, I've been sewing a bit lately and I finally had time to make the bikinis for my son's girlfriend for her birthday. I cut them out in February from some scrap fabric my friend gave me. I made my son some swimmers   and I see someone has some for sale if you feel you are missing out 😆.   I had to piece together the bikinis as I had nearly nothing left over. I made the top back and the briefs from the free Madelynne Noelle pattern and the front top from another Madelynne pattern I can't find a link for it but was Mallory Lane. It's a basic top with scrappy back. If anyone wants it I have the download. Looks like it's not available any more.  All this piecing and mixing was purely from fabric limitations. The other fabric I mixed it with was ombre from aqua blue to purple and matched well. I asked Liv if she wanted a frill down the centre front to break up the print as I wasn't sure she would, but she loved the idea, so on the went. She tr

Emergency Rashie KS2600

I go to aqua aerobics 3 or 4 times a week and I like to wear a rashie as it's outdoor and it's a bit warmer in the (not very cold usually but really warm this) winter, and I can't reach the spots for sunscreen. In Brisbane you must wear sunscreen every day even in winter as we have the highest skin cancer rates in the world and I don't want to be any more wrinkly than I am! Anyway, I went to the Gold Coast to see my friend for a few days and I left my rashie at her place and I she wouldn't get to Brisbane for a few days so I pulled out KS 2600. I saw this pattern listed on a pattern site and then became obsessed with it till I got it but this is my first chance to try it. Isn't it lovely! I wanted to test it to see how the fit was. I've made McCall's 7417 a few times but it's long between the shoulder and the arm for me and even though I have made a few it wasn't ever a great fit but it is a quick sew. The pants on the McCall's is a good fit
