Simplicity 9522 Jiffy

I made a stripy Super Jiffy Simplicity 9522. I made this last November and wore it to see Ed Kuepper  original member of the Brisbane band The Saints said to have started the punk rock movement. It was a free gig for the G20 meeting that was held here. It was a great gig.. Ed Keeper never disappoints (also loved his band The Laughing Clowns)... but hang on this is a sewing blog so onto the dress.

It's a very simple singlet style dress. The pattern shows it with a side split and self tie belt -both of which I didn't use.  The fabric is from Spotlight and one of the ones I've spoken about taking back.  It's a great weight cotton/poly knit with a great navy stripe... I really like it but.....

See the pilling? That's not even on a 'high traffic area' like on your hip where your bag rubs. That is really bad and pills the instant you wear it.

Good stripe matching on the back. The pattern doesn't call for using bands for the neckline or armholes but sometimes I think this is easier than turning it over and using the twin needle... I'm still yet to use the cover stitch machine (although in my defence, it hadn't been serviced when this was made - I bought it second hand for those that don't know or remember, that's why it needed a service before use - no excuses now as all the machines were serviced in December).

Now the pattern graphics show a really weird shaped neckline front and back, but it is like the photo shot. I found the 'straps' a little long and my error was to take an even amount off front and back and this turned out a little too much, making the armholes a little small and the dress rides up a bit. I also cut the back on in two pieces and added some seam allowance, and this allowed me to make a sway back adjustment which I need. I think I should bite the bullet and make a full bust adjustment to this and make it again. It is super easy and quick. Oh, I also added about 2cm to the hip area and then widened it to about 4 cm at the hem to fit my bottom half.  I think this is a good, basic singlet dress pattern that will be kept in my pattern collection.

I looked for the included "Time-Saver stretch knit methods" but didn't find anything out of the usual stuff and nothing that was even noted on the pattern as "Time-Saver" method! Oh this one was found at the Op Shop of course.

I found this dress at the op shop too... I like it a lot. What is not obvious is the ruched part is a separate piece so the amount of fabric needed is pretty small - 1.9m for a size 12. It has 3 options for the back neckline - low round, V and high neckline with a button closure, with the obvious 2 front necklines. Oh, View A has cap sleeves too... a nice option. That's it for the sewing ... I've got a few things still half done or not started, but the clearing of the pit is still in progress. Stay tuned.

Love a basic stripy dress. How disappointing with the fabric though - it's hard to quit Spotlight though isn't it.

Yes thought this would be in high rotation - smart, casual and ok to get out to the shops or school pick up but it's relegated to a house cleaning or garden dress now.

It is sad when fabric quality is the only reason a project didn't work out. Great stripe matching.

Don't you hate it when you spend a lot of time making a lovely item only to have it pill. It has happened to me with fabric from a renowned US supplier! Coverstitch machines are great. You want to take the plunge and use yours.

The striped dress is cute! Too bad about the piling. Have you heard of using a regular razor (even a cheapie disposable) for shaving off the pills? I have not tried this myself but I am tempted to try it on one of my favorite dresses.

That 2109 pattern looks super cute!!! WANT.

Hi Kyle, I have and did this with a cardigan I loved and I shaved a hole in it! I think getting one of the special razor/combs would be better. I won't with this dress as it's the sort of pilling that is tiny and close if that makes sense. But I will make the dress again with some better quality fabric soon I hope.

I've got a comb and they are great to use on pilling fabrics of all kinds.

Love the dress -classic striped singlet dresses always work and look good- but what a pity about the fabric. You know my feelings about Spotlight....

Yes, I do... LOL! Yes would have been a great dress ... on to the next iteration.

Ok, it's on the list!

That looks a great dress! Shame the fabric let it down with the pilling. Definitely worth making again. And damn, that pattern matching deserves a medal! xx

Spotlight is so hit and miss really. Love your stripe matching -any secrets? Love op shopping for sewing stuff as well - that's a really great mccalls dress pattern - I will be interested to see it made up. In December last year I score 10 burda mags for $20 and they were recent ones from 2011 and 2012. All complete as well. I could hardly keep my excitement from the shop keeper.

The best value is certainly those patterns.

The saddest dress, then a few more.

Well hello. It's been a while. It was 8 months from the last post to the previous one to that and it's a bit longer this time. The last day I wrote was 10 Jul 2021. On 12 July my son and I were finally seeing Tim Minchin  after booking it before we went to Europe at the end of 2019. It was going to be April 2020, but changed a few times and although it was a school night (year 12 for Alex) we went for dinner and sat in the show. My Mum had gone to hospital that morning and my sister was still at the hospital with her. Just after interval I got a message on my phone, "get to the hospital now". So we raced out and to the hospital where. although it was a lockdown and no visitors allowed, all 10 of us were allowed to see Mum as she was end of life. I won't go into the whole thing but Mum didn't die that night, but because of lockdown, we were not allowed to go and see her until a week and a half later when we were allowed just to discuss palliative care. Bubble O'Bill: take 2; bikinis

With some time at home, I've been sewing a bit lately and I finally had time to make the bikinis for my son's girlfriend for her birthday. I cut them out in February from some scrap fabric my friend gave me. I made my son some swimmers   and I see someone has some for sale if you feel you are missing out 😆.   I had to piece together the bikinis as I had nearly nothing left over. I made the top back and the briefs from the free Madelynne Noelle pattern and the front top from another Madelynne pattern I can't find a link for it but was Mallory Lane. It's a basic top with scrappy back. If anyone wants it I have the download. Looks like it's not available any more.  All this piecing and mixing was purely from fabric limitations. The other fabric I mixed it with was ombre from aqua blue to purple and matched well. I asked Liv if she wanted a frill down the centre front to break up the print as I wasn't sure she would, but she loved the idea, so on the went. She tr

Emergency Rashie KS2600

I go to aqua aerobics 3 or 4 times a week and I like to wear a rashie as it's outdoor and it's a bit warmer in the (not very cold usually but really warm this) winter, and I can't reach the spots for sunscreen. In Brisbane you must wear sunscreen every day even in winter as we have the highest skin cancer rates in the world and I don't want to be any more wrinkly than I am! Anyway, I went to the Gold Coast to see my friend for a few days and I left my rashie at her place and I she wouldn't get to Brisbane for a few days so I pulled out KS 2600. I saw this pattern listed on a pattern site and then became obsessed with it till I got it but this is my first chance to try it. Isn't it lovely! I wanted to test it to see how the fit was. I've made McCall's 7417 a few times but it's long between the shoulder and the arm for me and even though I have made a few it wasn't ever a great fit but it is a quick sew. The pants on the McCall's is a good fit
