Singer 66

Singer 66 - Mine!

Accessories kit with 201K Manual too!
This is my "new" sewing machine! Isn't she beautiful. I'm so excited! This is the same model machine that I learned to sew on and I think I made my first shirred dress when I was 10 in Grade 7! I have a photo somewhere.

I haven't had time to blog about it, but I went (November last year) to an Australian Sewing Guild meeting in my area. Now where have they been hiding as I have lived in this area since I was 8 so that is 42 years and sewn for 27 of those (well more if you count sewing on the Singer 66) but I had never heard of their meetings.

Anyway I went expecting about half a dozen people but there was about 35 women there, mostly older, but all doing some sewing or sewing crafty stuff and it was great. They have shared afternoon tea and also do a swap. People bring in fabric, books, magazines, patterns etc they aren't going to use and you take what you want.

I got a lovely piece of fabric that I am pretty sure is silk, a cowl neck top pattern and some magazines. I have been too busy to get back to the meetings but they are having their yearly conference in Adelaide in September and I hope I can get to it as there are some fantastic courses on offer (e.g. bra making). Anyone else heard of it or going? It has to fit with uni holidays and son going to his Dad's but I'm going to do my best.

Anyway I digress, I met a lovely lady there who, on me telling her I was looking for a Singer 66, told me she had just given one away (argh!) but she looked out for me and I got this one for $120 including some token payment for her friend delivering it. Her friend also cleaned it up a little and rubbed it over with linseed oil. I love it.I was worried as many months had passed since she got this for me that I wasn't even sure it was this model - just a treadle - but in the end I didn't care as I wanted a treadle, but I was pleasantly surprised.

The accessories have a ruffler (I didn't know that invention was so old - and looks similar to my modern one) and some other things I can't remember now. I'm trying not to touch or play with it as I have so much uni stuff that I cannot distract myself (like I am with this post!)or I won't get everything done, but who could resist bragging telling about this new purchase.

I am wildly jealous. What a fabulous bargain. I am on the look out for a treadle myself - not to mention a sewing group that just happens to meet when I can turn up occasionally!
I hope you get some time to sew on it.

What a marvelous new toy to play with! I have an old (1915) treadle machine from a neighbor, that I have been afraid to touch for fear of breaking it. You've inspired me to drag it out from under its dustcover and clean it up and oil it. I'll think about sewing with it later.

I hope you get one Karen. I love looking at it ... I just won't have time to play till mid June (boo hoo). For the sewing group have a look at "meetup" which is where I found the local one. I must get there again!

Hey I don't think you can break it! My mother's would have suffered through 5 girls (I have 4 sisters) who would have played with it. I still need to get new needles and stuff - there is one there but is rusty and I have Janome only... I don't even know if the singer needles are the same. I know the bobbins are not. Good luck getting yours out!

Hi, The shipping costs from Emma One Sock are quite reasonable. Given that the fabric is far cheaper than anything you could get in Australia for the same quality makes it so worth while. When you first place your order, the computer generates the postage cost. This is later changed when the owner cuts and weighs the fabric. The cost is often far cheaper than the original quote. Just to give you an idea, I ordered 3 pieces of fabric recently that were approx 2.5m in length each. All were lightweight silks and cottons. The postage totaled $14. Hope that's helpful. Bernice

How fantastic! And it sounds like you had a wonderful time, meeting like-minded ladies :)

It's a beautiful machine. I'm sure you'll enjoy trying it out once you have a spare moment (:
And how fun to go to a sewing guild meeting. I know they have them in my area, too. Will have to look into one someday.

Paris, river cruise 2022 - photo bomb!

(this post has been in my drafts since July 2022 due to life circumstances. I'm just going to write just a little and then just show some photos)  My friend worked on a  Superyacht  for many years and through this connection was offered a friends and family deal on a river cruise in Europe. It was a deal too good to miss even though it wouldn't have been a first choice for me for a holiday. She had done this trip before but during the winter  taking in the Christmas markets. We were going in June 2022. We decided to have 5 nights in Paris (where I'd been 5 times before) and 2 nights in Amsterdam where my friend lived for 2 years in her youth.  We flew into Frankfurt... not because we wanted to but because these were the only flights we could get but we worked with it. Remember great deal! So ok, a short (5hr), fast ride on the ICE/TGV trains got us to Paris eventually (one was late which missed the connection to the earlier TGV but there was one a bit after). We...

YFASMA - Fabric shopping in Athens

I promised this post in March! Fabrics from Euro1 per metre! I didn't buy anything in this shop but there was some lovely fabrics. I did buy the green and pink one above on the right. A satin finish rayon. It is lovely. There was a lot of lovely fabrics in this shop. It wasn't cheap Euro 8 p.m. but I didn't have a lot of room in my bag and I wanted something I would really love. I also didn't buy anything in Paris this time. I did buy the  fabric for a table cloth  just across the way from this shop. I also bought some orange/white weave linen fabric for Euro 4 p.m. at another shop, which I think I'll make some summer trousers with.  As I was going to the airport, I saw this dress on the platform and I really liked it. Very easy to do too, I went to the  Benaki Museum  while in Athens. There is actually 2 locations. In this one I saw lots of Greek and Cypriot cultural crafts. This was a bridal bed in Crete. There was lots of clothing, embroidery and gold jewelle...

More things I've made - part 2

Hello... welcome to part two of things I've made. I now realise there will be a part 3 as there's more I can't post tonight. These things I made last year before I went to South Korea for a holiday. The photos of the top that I made with the Vogue pattern above are down below. Don't know why Blogger won't let me move them, but I don't have time to argue with it!  Anyway, I made it with some merino French Terry I bought years ago. It is merino loops, but the outer facing part of the fabric is nylon. It's very lightweight, warm and comfortable  but not the best for this pattern as the nice high neck doesn't stay up high, but it's still really nice and useful in my warmish winter. I made it as the vest top and hemmed it and bound the armholes with some fold over elastic I bought at some markets in Lisbon in my trip last year. I put a chunky metal pink zip as the closure. I will make this again as I really like that it's not a boring old pullover. I...
