Simplicity 8573 and Vintage Pledge

Well it's been a busy summer holiday season what with ageing parents and young children. It's been that 'busy but relaxed' sort of time - many activities, like the day at the big rambling park with lots of friends and cousins and the kids with their bikes and scooters and long picnic table with food. It made for a really fun day and the bonus was that it was so cool at the park despite the 34 deg celsius.

I actually made this a couple of months ago and have worn this to death. I have spoken of it but had no pictures with me wearing it. It's a Simplicity Jiffy Plus pattern - what's the plus mean? I don't know... maybe a bit more complex? Anyway it was quick and easy.  A couple of things to note about the pattern. See the ties? They are just threaded through channels on the right side of the dress and the back is one piece but the front is made of the top bodice and the skirt part. I omitted the pockets so the pattern would be seen. I also didn't use buttons, but made the button holes and put the straps through and tied them in a knot and then sewed it down... this slips easily over my head with no loosening of the ties even.

Some bad photos ... I was just going to the pool for aqua aerobics (you can see my tog straps) and thought it is probably my only opportunity for a snap. I love the diagonal on the front.

The back lines are straight as mentioned before, it's one piece with the channel for the ties sewn on the right side. I used a sarong I bought in Singapore in 2009 (I love shopping and eating in Singapore) and if you notice, I used the 'fancy' panel that is normally on the front when wearing a sarong for the front, and the balance of the fabric I used on the back. Surprisingly, a sarong was the perfect size for this dress.
The pattern was actually a bit wider down the bottom but I straightened it a bit to fit the sarong width. With a drapier fabric I think it would be fine but as a sarong is made of lovely cotton, it was actually better this width for me.

The colours are exactly right here.

I knew the top wouldn't be big enough and the two piece front - bodice and skirt pattern pieces - made it easy to do a full bust adjustment. I tried two methods but felt the usual one seen was the more accurate. I did forget to add extra on the back piece for the added length on the front piece, but I just gathered it lightly on the front piece to fit the back, which was fine. I also gathered the extra length of the under bust seam with gathers and as the ties gather the dress, it is worked out well. The only thing I didn't think to do is to lower the neckline... I think when you have a large bust it looks better with a lower neckline.. I'll cut it down by about 5 or 6 cm. If I had enough scrap I'd do it for this as it kind of bothers me a bit being so high.

Other than the neckline, I am pretty happy with this dress. It's perfect for a hot day and it's a good style for me. I like a shorter length but I think it would look terrible with the sarong print cut off so I've left it. I still have to finish those Burda trousers by just putting on the waistband but my sewing room is so messy I have to tidy it before I will do that. I can work in a little mess for a while, but I prefer everything in it's place. I'm just trying to make the best use of my 3.5 x 1.7 metre space so may do some rearranging.

Oh the vintage pledge... I'm not a pledger and I rarely join in sewalongs and such like, but I worked out I made many (not sure about 'many') more vintage patterns than I did modern patterns so maybe I should pledge to make 5 vintage patterns this year. Who do I pledge this to?? Can anyone lead me in the right direction? Thanks for reading.

I like the final look! Where do you get these vintage patterns from, and how are the directions in them? I have heard they tend to be better than the instructions included in the newer patterns today. I would love to try an "older" pattern for a change. I never have.

Thanks Judy, that's a nice compliment.

Hi Vanessa. Thanks. I get the patterns from op (thrift) shops for normally a few dollars and sometimes I get lucky and they are only $1. I have way too many and will be putting them for sale when I can bother to photograph them etc. I'd love to send you a couple... what sort do you like. Email me at sofiem@internode.on.net and we can work it out.

It's looks very pretty - great use of the print. I just read that pinafore style dresses are coming back in, so you are ahead of the trend pack :). And as you say, perfect for your climate. I don't mind on the run pictures - it's hard to fit blogging into life, without chasing picture perfection as well. That time is better spent in sewing - for me, at least :)

Ha, that'll be a first for me to be on trend or ahead! Thank you.
I like the way you've used the pattern on the fabric. It looks perfect for summer. Sarongs are great to use for sewing aren't they :-) Especially that border they usually have. Nice pattern too. Simple but lovely, and looks very wearable.

This is a perfect dress for wearing to aquatics. It looks great on you. I haven't picked a pattern for my aquatics dress, but have seen one that one of the ladies wear that I like and this one.

Thanks, yes I thought about how I put it on to make use of the diagonal and vertical pattern. So cool to wear, sarongs.

Hi - I couldn't seem to reply to your comment about the supplex at stretchtex. You can request samples on-line and when they come, send them an email about how much you want of what (quote the codes they have on the sample card). I also say I am happy to pay a fee for the small cuts. Then I give them my phone number so they can call me for payment and I pay over the phone with my CC. They don't give a quote for the delivery fee but don't overcharge (it is heavy fabric). They just charge the final fee after it is cut and they send really fast. Usually get it in a day or two. HTH :) Sue

Oh thanks Sue. I wrote to them the other day but haven't heard yet. This extra information is really helpful. Maybe I'll ring them to ask for the samples. I'm not in too big a hurry as I have swimwear I am desperate to make but my niece is really keen! Sofie

Paris, river cruise 2022 - photo bomb!

(this post has been in my drafts since July 2022 due to life circumstances. I'm just going to write just a little and then just show some photos)  My friend worked on a  Superyacht  for many years and through this connection was offered a friends and family deal on a river cruise in Europe. It was a deal too good to miss even though it wouldn't have been a first choice for me for a holiday. She had done this trip before but during the winter  taking in the Christmas markets. We were going in June 2022. We decided to have 5 nights in Paris (where I'd been 5 times before) and 2 nights in Amsterdam where my friend lived for 2 years in her youth.  We flew into Frankfurt... not because we wanted to but because these were the only flights we could get but we worked with it. Remember great deal! So ok, a short (5hr), fast ride on the ICE/TGV trains got us to Paris eventually (one was late which missed the connection to the earlier TGV but there was one a bit after). We...

YFASMA - Fabric shopping in Athens

I promised this post in March! Fabrics from Euro1 per metre! I didn't buy anything in this shop but there was some lovely fabrics. I did buy the green and pink one above on the right. A satin finish rayon. It is lovely. There was a lot of lovely fabrics in this shop. It wasn't cheap Euro 8 p.m. but I didn't have a lot of room in my bag and I wanted something I would really love. I also didn't buy anything in Paris this time. I did buy the  fabric for a table cloth  just across the way from this shop. I also bought some orange/white weave linen fabric for Euro 4 p.m. at another shop, which I think I'll make some summer trousers with.  As I was going to the airport, I saw this dress on the platform and I really liked it. Very easy to do too, I went to the  Benaki Museum  while in Athens. There is actually 2 locations. In this one I saw lots of Greek and Cypriot cultural crafts. This was a bridal bed in Crete. There was lots of clothing, embroidery and gold jewelle...

More things I've made - part 2

Hello... welcome to part two of things I've made. I now realise there will be a part 3 as there's more I can't post tonight. These things I made last year before I went to South Korea for a holiday. The photos of the top that I made with the Vogue pattern above are down below. Don't know why Blogger won't let me move them, but I don't have time to argue with it!  Anyway, I made it with some merino French Terry I bought years ago. It is merino loops, but the outer facing part of the fabric is nylon. It's very lightweight, warm and comfortable  but not the best for this pattern as the nice high neck doesn't stay up high, but it's still really nice and useful in my warmish winter. I made it as the vest top and hemmed it and bound the armholes with some fold over elastic I bought at some markets in Lisbon in my trip last year. I put a chunky metal pink zip as the closure. I will make this again as I really like that it's not a boring old pullover. I...
