How lucky can I get?

How special do I feel lately? Well, very. You see I made a comment on CarmentcitaB's blog a few weeks ago and Carmen contacted me and said she was going to send me a surprise! Just for making a comment. If you don't know her blog (as if!) go and have a look. She puts up some amazing videos (some couture house's workings, the wrap dress that went on and on)and also has made some challenging items (the Chanel copy rain coat - my favourite).

This is a little address sticker on the envelope - isn't it the cutest!
 And this is my surprise... it is perfect for me. I have some beautiful sky blue and silver brocade that was my mother's from the '60s and if there is enough I will make this - view 2 - but not till next summer as uni is manic (procrastination is ruling - that's why I'm blogging)and it is coming into winter. It's a size 16 which by the bust and waist measurements will fit me for sure.
My surprise!
 Not only have I got the My Image patterns last week but also the current Ottobre magazine. I have been getting the two women's magazines for a couple of years and I really like them although so far I only have an unfinished knit top started. They are good simple but useful designs and I like a lot in this one.

The twist bodice dress and top, the basic tees, the slim leg trousers and the long jacket which has some nice lines and may be made out of a stretch silver denim. The colour block dress (no 8) doesn't look much but looks really nice on the model in the magazine. But not much sewing will go on here for a bit. But it's nice to have the distraction!

 Oh on a small housekeeping note: I have been getting lots of spam comments (more than actual real comments) and it is really annoying. If I keep getting them I'm going to turn on the verification thing again. Sorry if that puts you off - I don't get many comments so I don't want to but I don't want comments from random spam rubbish either.

I'm curious where you get the Ottobre mags from? It looks like they have some nice patterns.

Hi Suzy! I have subscribed directly on their website. It's only Euro14 plus Euro 4 for postage and that is two magazines a year. There is also the option to get the 4 kids ones in a subscription too but as it is mostly girl fashion I don't get these. I think you can also get individual magazines from them and I am sure www.sewmamasew is the distributor in Australia. There are lots of good basic designs and they seem to have a 'normal' fit rather than the US type fit. A bit like burda. I like it.

I am very glad you like it. Simplicity Patterns as re-released it if you want to compare. Can't wait to see the dress.

Yes I thought that is the re-released one. I have to find the fabric in my stash.. it's not at the top as it is such a special fabric. I hope there is enough for this dress.. it will look amazing if there is.

oh I have that Simplicity pattern in my stash too, but have never found the right fabric for it so I'm looking forward to seeing your version. I've just had to turn back word verification on my blog, not only were the spam comments becoming too frequent they were starting to get obscene too. It's so annoying!

Oh I haven't had any obscene ones but I am getting really annoyed too. I have always liked that pattern too - roll on end of uni!

What a cool vintage pattern. I love the bust darts and the curvy empire line. I bought the new release for my daughter but haven't made it up yet. I think the vintage pattern has much more appealing illustrations!
I fancy the jersey jacket in Ottobre. I have this magazine lying on my sewing table next to some green merino. I hope Uni calms down a bit for you.

thanks! Not long to go to finish so I should try and enjoy it (and I do) . Yeah I like that one too... the way it covers the shoulders is nice and the peplum waist is nice too.

Island night... PNG cruise

Well hello again. I've just come back from a cruise to Papua New Guinea and I made a dress for Island night. Island night or any theme night is just a suggestion... there is no organised event, meals, activities; just a dress code suggestion.  As soon as I read that, I searched for this vintage surfie fabric I bought years ago at an op shop. I was thrilled to use it. I needed an easy pattern that I could make 2 days before the cruise departure and one that I would wear again.  I used this Style 2911 pattern that I only bought online a few months ago. More things I've made - part 3.

Well part 3 is here. First up Style 1876. Did I ever say that Style are my favourite patterns? So this one was an op shop find a long time ago. It's a great pattern. I can't remember if the bodice is cut on the bias (but I think not) and the skirt is cut on the bias. I made it out of some synthetic crepe in the most fabulous colour. It has great pockets that you can see on the red dress.. The are sewn onto the back pieces, and then when you sew it up and leave the opening, you stitch the pocket onto the inside/front of the dress. That pocket isn't going anywhere. I used up all the fabric which was a gift from a friend's mother in law. It turned out to be a bit see though and I didn't wear it. It fits so nicely around the shoulders and arm holes. I decided I was going to wear it to Brisbane Spoolettes Frocktails this year as I didn't have time to make something else. Trying a vintage togs pattern.

                       Hello, it's been a while again. Not as long as some bloggers who have recently returned to blogging...up to 7 years, but I'm glad people are coming back. I never joined Instagram as I'm not that fussed on 'social media' and more with people who write about their sewing.  So back to sewing. I picked up this vintage McCalls togs pattern. It's quite a good value pattern as there are three very different and interesting swimsuits included. That's pretty rare. It's a size 16. I decided to make view B. All of the patterns have pieces for the bra cups too which is really great. Photographed with it is a Burda beach wrap. I can't find the magazine number right now, but it's at least 10 years old. Basically it's a large square of fabric with arm holes cut out. The fabric is genuine 70s towelling. I know because Mum bought it to cover our 'fantastic plastic' vinyl couch. Vinyl was preferred back then...
