Vogue 9253

I was coveting this pattern for a while and waited for the pattern sales...once, twice ... it was never available but on the third sale, I got it. Amy very kindly and generously (she's like that) did offer her copy should I never get one.  Love my Spoolette sewing sisters!

My (blood, non sewing) sister does lots of great op shopping and bought this dress ... adult version of the pillowcase dress. It was huge and very long for me so I picked it apart one tv night and it was enough fabric to make this dress if I slimmed down the skirt and make shorter sleeves. Both modifications were fine with me because a) too hot to have the long sleeves now, b) not sure the full skirt wouldn't make me look huge and c) I was testing this pattern out for a beautiful silk my friend brought back from Vietnam for me a few years ago (and keeps asking if I've made anything yet). It is white with flowers and very beautiful but only 2 metres from memory and I wanted to see if it would fit. I immediately bought some nude colour silk lining from The Fabric Store .... also waiting patiently.

I unpicked and used the bias strip on the back neckline as the pattern has you do. That was convenient and so easy when it was permanently 'pressed'. Oh another thing, with large lengths of rayon instead of ironing it, I usually wet it and hang it and it kind of irons itself. In our warm weather it only takes about 30 minutes to dry and took out all the folds and sewing marks.

I used the neck/shoulder tie for the belt but I sewed it into the side seams.... for some reason the pattern tells you to sew it on the outside... not sure why you would do that... if you sew it in the seam allowance you can use the tie on the back or the front. If you sew it on the outside you could only tie it one way.

The front is very low and I love the look on a smaller busted woman, but for me that is a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen so I sewed it up about 10 cm but think I'll close it up a bit more to make it more respectable. The back also needs about 8cm taken out of the shoulder area, even though I made the size 6 top. I have VERY narrow back and shoulders and this is a very loose dress.

I haven't had much time lately. My Mum has been unwell again and doing some housekeeping stuff  takes up my meagre weekend. I also had a week off sick... I did manage to sew a few seams here and there between lying on the bed listening to true crime podcasts and coughing my guts up.

Oh, today a lovely friend (sewing friend) and I went out on an impromptu coffee then talked ourselves into going to The Fabric Store.. we couldn't get a park so popped into some op shops around there and I got a few great things. Then I went and picked up another Bernina Active 240 that was a bargain on Gumtree again. I guess I could keep it as a back up but I'll sell it along with many other machines I have to get myself a new lounge I think.

Thanks for the nice comments re my linen cardi. Till next time.

Paris, river cruise 2022 - photo bomb!

(this post has been in my drafts since July 2022 due to life circumstances. I'm just going to write just a little and then just show some photos)  My friend worked on a  Superyacht  for many years and through this connection was offered a friends and family deal on a river cruise in Europe. It was a deal too good to miss even though it wouldn't have been a first choice for me for a holiday. She had done this trip before but during the winter  taking in the Christmas markets. We were going in June 2022. We decided to have 5 nights in Paris (where I'd been 5 times before) and 2 nights in Amsterdam where my friend lived for 2 years in her youth.  We flew into Frankfurt... not because we wanted to but because these were the only flights we could get but we worked with it. Remember great deal! So ok, a short (5hr), fast ride on the ICE/TGV trains got us to Paris eventually (one was late which missed the connection to the earlier TGV but there was one a bit after). We...

YFASMA - Fabric shopping in Athens

I promised this post in March! Fabrics from Euro1 per metre! I didn't buy anything in this shop but there was some lovely fabrics. I did buy the green and pink one above on the right. A satin finish rayon. It is lovely. There was a lot of lovely fabrics in this shop. It wasn't cheap Euro 8 p.m. but I didn't have a lot of room in my bag and I wanted something I would really love. I also didn't buy anything in Paris this time. I did buy the  fabric for a table cloth  just across the way from this shop. I also bought some orange/white weave linen fabric for Euro 4 p.m. at another shop, which I think I'll make some summer trousers with.  As I was going to the airport, I saw this dress on the platform and I really liked it. Very easy to do too, I went to the  Benaki Museum  while in Athens. There is actually 2 locations. In this one I saw lots of Greek and Cypriot cultural crafts. This was a bridal bed in Crete. There was lots of clothing, embroidery and gold jewelle...

More things I've made - part 2

Hello... welcome to part two of things I've made. I now realise there will be a part 3 as there's more I can't post tonight. These things I made last year before I went to South Korea for a holiday. The photos of the top that I made with the Vogue pattern above are down below. Don't know why Blogger won't let me move them, but I don't have time to argue with it!  Anyway, I made it with some merino French Terry I bought years ago. It is merino loops, but the outer facing part of the fabric is nylon. It's very lightweight, warm and comfortable  but not the best for this pattern as the nice high neck doesn't stay up high, but it's still really nice and useful in my warmish winter. I made it as the vest top and hemmed it and bound the armholes with some fold over elastic I bought at some markets in Lisbon in my trip last year. I put a chunky metal pink zip as the closure. I will make this again as I really like that it's not a boring old pullover. I...
