I Dream of Genie

My Mum called me the other day - she asked if I could go over and thread the needle to her sewing machine as she couldn't see well enough to do it.

This is Mum's 'modern' machine - she used to sew all our clothes when we were young on a Singer treadle machine like the one I bought last year. - and just to add some context to this; I have 4 sisters! Also, without patterns, just like she learned in Cyprus where she grew up.

Don't you love the '70's floral decal on the machine. Notice on the instruction booklet "Now with NEW elastic stretch stitch"! It kept breaking the thread when Mum was trying to sew but she had the stitch length and tension set wrongly and the thread was probably 20 years old. I sewed up the curtains for her to save her the grief! It ran like a dream.

While I was cleaning it up before I used it a younger sister said  "are you cleaning it because you think you're going to get it???"... doh!.. none of my sisters sew so I presume it will be mine eventually..but that's not what I told her!

Goodie....no competition for the sewing stuff then? I have a daughter & son and our arrangement is DD will have my stuff and DS will have his Dads in the shed. My DH has a passion for old cars and mine is craft/sewing/quilting stuff. And I have A LOT! I suggested to DD fairly recently that I should really try to sort out & cull some of my stuff but she was horrified and said she would be more than happy to do that later for me. ha ha. I have to say it is of some relief/comfort that all my much loved 'stuff' will be going to a good home and I can surround myself with it for as long as I like.

Oh that's great! At least you know someone will appreciate it. There isn't much stash at Mum's as I got some of it already. Deciding what to do with it but it is mostly winter things. I'd love DD's collection too! Lucky children!

That's such a cool machine.
My godmother tried to describe how to draft patterns from scratch years ago and now I'm about to try it.
Your Mum sounds like a very talented sewer.

Oh good luck. I remember my mum getting fitted for dresses with her cousin's wife. they basically pinned fabric on the body and cut and shaped as they went. I have one brocade dress in white and silver - I just don't fit into it again!

What a lovely machine. My mother had a machine but really wasn't a good sewer. She didn't like doing it, so she was never enthusiastic. She at least taught me the basics and she was a great knitter.

Oh my mum could also knit but she is left handed and so when she taught me I had some funny waving of the needles around thing going on.. I couldn't turn it around in my head to right handed, hence I don't knit! I wish I did. I can crochet but can't read patterns... more things on the list!

That sounds like draping to me.

That is such a cute machine. Thank you for commenting about my hair problems. Will you tell me more about henna? I keep hearing about it and that it makes your hair red? I have seen the hair of people who use it and it is beautiful. For some reason I have always been a little scared of it--probably because I don't know anything about it.

I have my grandmother's "modern" machine which is about the same vintage, but - alas - no flowers. ;-)
(I have 4 sisters too!)

The Genie was the first sewing machine I owned - my parents gave it to me for my 21st birthday - its was lightweight and portable, and it went on many travels with me. It worked very hard, and I finally burnt the poor thing out after about 25 years service. I hope you enjoy it.

Paris, river cruise 2022 - photo bomb!

(this post has been in my drafts since July 2022 due to life circumstances. I'm just going to write just a little and then just show some photos)  My friend worked on a  Superyacht  for many years and through this connection was offered a friends and family deal on a river cruise in Europe. It was a deal too good to miss even though it wouldn't have been a first choice for me for a holiday. She had done this trip before but during the winter  taking in the Christmas markets. We were going in June 2022. We decided to have 5 nights in Paris (where I'd been 5 times before) and 2 nights in Amsterdam where my friend lived for 2 years in her youth.  We flew into Frankfurt... not because we wanted to but because these were the only flights we could get but we worked with it. Remember great deal! So ok, a short (5hr), fast ride on the ICE/TGV trains got us to Paris eventually (one was late which missed the connection to the earlier TGV but there was one a bit after). We...

YFASMA - Fabric shopping in Athens

I promised this post in March! Fabrics from Euro1 per metre! I didn't buy anything in this shop but there was some lovely fabrics. I did buy the green and pink one above on the right. A satin finish rayon. It is lovely. There was a lot of lovely fabrics in this shop. It wasn't cheap Euro 8 p.m. but I didn't have a lot of room in my bag and I wanted something I would really love. I also didn't buy anything in Paris this time. I did buy the  fabric for a table cloth  just across the way from this shop. I also bought some orange/white weave linen fabric for Euro 4 p.m. at another shop, which I think I'll make some summer trousers with.  As I was going to the airport, I saw this dress on the platform and I really liked it. Very easy to do too, I went to the  Benaki Museum  while in Athens. There is actually 2 locations. In this one I saw lots of Greek and Cypriot cultural crafts. This was a bridal bed in Crete. There was lots of clothing, embroidery and gold jewelle...

More things I've made - part 2

Hello... welcome to part two of things I've made. I now realise there will be a part 3 as there's more I can't post tonight. These things I made last year before I went to South Korea for a holiday. The photos of the top that I made with the Vogue pattern above are down below. Don't know why Blogger won't let me move them, but I don't have time to argue with it!  Anyway, I made it with some merino French Terry I bought years ago. It is merino loops, but the outer facing part of the fabric is nylon. It's very lightweight, warm and comfortable  but not the best for this pattern as the nice high neck doesn't stay up high, but it's still really nice and useful in my warmish winter. I made it as the vest top and hemmed it and bound the armholes with some fold over elastic I bought at some markets in Lisbon in my trip last year. I put a chunky metal pink zip as the closure. I will make this again as I really like that it's not a boring old pullover. I...
